Where Does Your Railway Come From?

Most of us have travelled by train but not many of us have considered where our trains and railway systems come from.

In fact, much of the various components needed to run railways services are manufactured in the UK by highly skilled engineers.

It is engineers that help develop our railways, helping them run more efficiently and giving us the freedom to travel quickly and safely around the country.

Railways are made up of several components which include train carriages, tracks, signal lighting and electrical systems, amongst other things.

One of the main companies that manufactures parts for railways is based in Stourbridge in the West Midlands. They make the Zwicky range of obstructionless hydraulic track jacks.

In addition they also manufacture track tools, sleeper beams, rail beams, rail thimbles and bespoke equipment.

Many of the track tools they make are specially insulated so they can be used on electric systems like the London underground. Standard tools include spanners, manual handling tools, bars, shovels, forks and fast clip tools. Their insulated range includes forks, keying hammers and pick handles.

Sleeper beams include fixed sleeper lifting beams, fixed sleeper laying beams, adjustable sleeper beams and dropper chains.

Rail beams include manual rail handling beams and hydraulic rail handling beams. They are manufactured to lift heavy beams quickly and efficiently. Thimbles are used with road rail machines and long welded rail trains.

All these tools represent just a tiny element of what is required to run and maintain railways and illustrates what difficult and dangerous job railway maintenance can be.

Many of us take for granted the running of our train services without realising the amount of work that goes into maintaining the service. Railway engineers are always working somewhere on the railway system and need to check for various things on a daily basis.

Although railway engineering is sometimes carried out during the day and at weekends most of it takes place overnight meaning that there is less disruption to services.

During this time railway engineers check electrics, railway beams, railway tracks, signalling and a host of other elements. If a beam or rail is showing signs of fatigue then it must be replaced which is where some of the aforementioned equipment comes into play.

The UK rail network is one of the safest in the world and that is down to the people who look after it. Railway maintenance involves a great deal of hard work and technical ability to carry out safely.

Hire Lifting Gear For Your Construction Job

If you are carrying out a job where you need to move heavy objects then you need to hire lifting gear. Both manual and powered hoists are readily available. They normally come equipped with chain or wire rope and are suitable for use in several different types of job. Hand hoists can lift weights from between 500 kg to 50 tonnes and are lightweight and easy to use. Winches are available in both manual and powered versions and can range from lightweight, portable versions to more heavy duty, high speed models. They can also include winching accessories which enhance the performance of the winch.

Slings and loose gear can also be utilised when lifting heavy objects. Chain slings can be for more general use or have a specific purpose, such as pipe lifting and wheelbarrow lifting. They are available at various lengths and can lift various capacities of weight.

Materials handling machinery is designed to eliminate the need for manual handling in line with regulations which specify that manual handling of heavy goods is to be avoided wherever possible. Various manual handling equipment is available for hire such as Genie Superlifts,  booms, load plates, fork extensions and pipe cradles. Floor cranes can also be hired which are foldable, as well as counter balanced floor cranes.

Enjoy Off Roading This Summer

You’ve tried bungee jumping, diving, hang gliding and surfing, so now it’s time to try something different – off roading.

If you’ve ever met anyone that enjoys this fabulous hobby then you’ll know that once you get them talking about it it’s difficult to get them to stop! That’s because it’s such an exciting and enjoyable pass time that people can do for years and years and still feel as enthused about it as they did their first time.

One of the reasons off roading is so popular is the element of controlled danger. There’s nothing better than feeling the thrill as you bound over rocky terrain, through rivers, up mountains and down valleys.

Once you are driving along with your hands on the wheel and the wind in your hair you’ll be kicking yourself that you didn’t try it sooner.

Off roading is a great hobby for all different types of people because as long as you can drive, you can give it a go. All you need is the courage to go for it and somewhere to do it.

There are thousands of places all over the world where you can try it out and hundreds just within the UK. You’ll find that you can book an off roading day near you quite easily and can experience off roading holidays in such far flung places and Egypt and the US.
