July 23rd, 2009

UK based PD Ports has been congratulated for its recent management of a very special heavy load project cargo, which arrived into the Hull Container Terminal on the ‘Beluga Federation’ ship in June.

PD Ports was awarded the initial business through Transcar Projects Ltd a well respected international freight company, with a request to handle the special project cargo. The contract was won despite huge competition from other companies based on the Humber.

The special cargo was expected at the Saltend BP power station for which it was required as part of the power station’s cooling system.

The project involving the Beluga Federation, which transported the project cargo from Kandla, India, was completed in three days and involved the management of 4 heavy lifts, two weighing up at 135 tons each and two at 94 tons each. Another 73 cargo lifts of up to 37 tons each were also removed from the vessel.

The heavy lifting gear project called drew upon the wider resources of the PD Ports Group and involved the skills and disciplines of HCT and Middlesbrough based experts who reliably ensured the whole project went without any untoward incident or disruption to other commitments being conducted on the port terminal.

PD Ports has managed HCT since the early nineties and last year they entered a new contract to operate HCT for another 8 years. This will include fro its entirety about £4 million extral investment by PD Ports to upgrade the overall efficiency of its systems.

Could We See the Mini Brand Breaking New Ground

The Mini has once of the most famous backgrounds and pedigrees in the motor industry and now there is speculation that it is set to break even more new ground if stories are true about a 4×4 version of the car are proved to be true.

Rumours were sparked sometime ago but the latest reports also indicate that BMW, the new owners of the Mini brand have taken possession of the Countryman and ActiveE official trademarks.

Network Rail Fined For Maintenance Failure

July 16th, 2009

Britain’s rail network operator has been fined £70,000 for failing to maintain a level crossing at Croxton which caused the derailment of a high speed train back in 2006.

The courts also ordered Network Rail to pay costs of £25,000. Network Rail pleaded guilty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 after the train hit a large rubber panel at the rail crossing which was not fitted correctly.

Due to the fact the panel was ill fitted it was shortly dislodged by a number of motor vehicles which then presented it to the line causing the train to derail.

In doing so the company also found itself guilty for breaching the Level Crossing Regulations 1997 its responsibility to maintain at fit rail equipment correctly remain imperative to the health and safety of its worker and members of the general public.
