Heavy Lifting Project Praised for Efficiency

July 23rd, 2009

UK based PD Ports has been congratulated for its recent management of a very special heavy load project cargo, which arrived into the Hull Container Terminal on the ‘Beluga Federation’ ship in June.

PD Ports was awarded the initial business through Transcar Projects Ltd a well respected international freight company, with a request to handle the special project cargo. The contract was won despite huge competition from other companies based on the Humber.

The special cargo was expected at the Saltend BP power station for which it was required as part of the power station’s cooling system.

The project involving the Beluga Federation, which transported the project cargo from Kandla, India, was completed in three days and involved the management of 4 heavy lifts, two weighing up at 135 tons each and two at 94 tons each. Another 73 cargo lifts of up to 37 tons each were also removed from the vessel.

The heavy lifting gear project called drew upon the wider resources of the PD Ports Group and involved the skills and disciplines of HCT and Middlesbrough based experts who reliably ensured the whole project went without any untoward incident or disruption to other commitments being conducted on the port terminal.

PD Ports has managed HCT since the early nineties and last year they entered a new contract to operate HCT for another 8 years. This will include fro its entirety about £4 million extral investment by PD Ports to upgrade the overall efficiency of its systems.

Education Provides Lifeline to Construction Industry

In the midst of the current economic downturn with recession predicted to be looming for at least another year its great to hear some good news every now and then.

Catalyst Education, a group of companies headed by Bovis Lend Lease and Catalyst Lend Lease have just secured a very impressive contract to rebuild or regenerate all of Birmingham’s eighty nine secondary schools, a contract that is expected to take another fifteen years.

The contract is reported to be worth £1.2bn and is expected to see local companies benefit from the funding that will be made available. The construction industry from builders through to providers of cranes and heavy lifting gear will benefit from the lucrative contract.

The funding provided through the Governments BSF initiative (Building Schools for the Future) was awarded to Catalyst Education by Birmingham City Council and is reported to be the largest single investment for school improvements in the last half century.

The first phase of the project will start next April and is expected to take twelve months to complete as it spans across a number of Birmingham schools including: Four Dwellings, Park View, Moseley, Broadway, George Dixon and a number of other secondary schools.

In working closely with the construction industry the Birmingham City Council has helped form a Local Education Partnership. This is great news for many companies involved in the building and construction industry including surrounding services from lifting gear suppliers to skilled labour requirements.

January 20th, 2009

New Man at the Top

The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) has appointed a new CEO in the form of Geoff Holden who has just spent the previous six months as Chief Executive designate. With over 33 years experience in the heavy lifting industry and overhead lifting industry Holden is best placed to take on this executive position at the LEEA.

There will be a big focus on support this year to the ever expanding membership base at the LEEA. The Heavy lifting industry is fortunate is some areas that larger projects are still being processed with budgets already allocated whilst the small to medium industries are going to feel the pinch along with supporting industries.

With nearly 250 companies across the world in its membership the LEEA is fast becoming an international authority in the heavy lifting industry and Holden is keen to nurture the ever expanding international support and membership it is receiving.

Major Industrial Projects Can Survive Recession

Street Crane managing director Andrew Pimblett is predicting a good year in 2009 despite the gloomy news predicted for business in general across the board in the forth coming year. Laying out his optimistic beliefs for the up and coming year ahead Pimblett is keen for Street Crane to achieve the success it has continued to achieve in previous years.

Every good businessman knows that even in recession some companies will prosper whilst others suffer and it is usually the larger industrial projects that tend to shine through and deliver the goods. Having achieved an successful 2007-2008 financial year Street Cranes now has its books full with heavy lifting gear, hoists and crane orders to the point where they are now completing a three quarters of a million pound extension to their main factory.

Street Cranes has enjoyed success since its foundation back in 1946 and inparticular over the past decade launching a series of industry leading hoists and crane lifting gear and it places the majority of its success down to a number of keys factors including being able to cater for delivering world class products to a global consumer market place, without having to rely solely on the UK market
